Sammis Greenhouse is located at 2407 Upper Brush Valley Road, Centre Hall, PA.
Business phone: (814) 364-2881
Hours: We open mid-April every year. Please call for our current hours, as they change throughout the season!
We grow all of our plants on-site, and throughout the season also bring back a great selection of mostly-local produce from a nearby auction. (Try the tomatoes, they’re delicious!!)
Most of our vegetable plants will be ready mid to late May (we recommend planting after Memorial Day, to avoid frost). If there’s something special you’re looking for, it might be best to call ahead and see what’s available.
Sammis Greenhouse is handicap accessible; outside display areas are black-topped, the inside of the greenhouse is completely paved with concrete, and our parking lot is now mostly black-topped as well!
Where’s Sammi?
Sammis, not Sammy’s! A lot of people mispronounce our name; the greenhouse is owned and run by Leo Sammis. There is no Sammy. Or Sammi. :)
Who’s writing this blog?
I’m Leigh Ann Gagnon (formerly Sammis), Leo’s daughter. I’ve been growing the herbs here at the greenhouse since 2000. I graduated from college in May of 2009; while I was away it was difficult to coordinate a lot of the information that our herb customers seemed to be looking for, when they were looking for it . Even though I’m home now and will be more accessible to assist customers with herb-related questions in the greenhouse, I thought this blog might be an excellent way to make the information available at all times, any time you have a question or need to see what’s in stock.
So fire away! Let me know what sorts of things you’re interested in knowing when you buy or use herbs, and help us to better serve your needs. I love growing herbs, and I’d love to pass some of that enjoyment on to you.

Hi … my wife and I were out today … I always bring my camera. Here’s a link to some photos from today (July 8). Forward the link to anyone you think might be interested in seeing what’s still there. It’s always nice to wander thru your collection of colors!

I see that this blog is geared more towards herbs which I like. Is there a possibility of expanding to include fruits and vegetables as well?
April 14, 2012 at 3:24 pm
There’s a possibility that I’d touch on them, but not to the same depth. We have fruits and vegetables as well as succulents, trees, shrubs, perennials, annual bedding plants, and more at the greenhouse, but the herbs are my personal specialty and responsibility. I started with a single tray of chocolate mint back when I was twelve, and have been adding to the selection ever since. Now I grow around a hundred different varieties!
If you have questions about other plants I can check and get some answers, but at this point I just don’t have the time to write much about non-herbs. Sorry!

I think I have some of the original chocolate mint in Molly’s herb garden. :)

Oh man! That’s been there for a long time now. :) Mint is nothing if not resilient.

I am interested in thai hot peppers for transplant. They’re also called “bird peppers”, or “bird chile”, or “prik chi fa”. Sammis’s has had them in past years and I was wondering about this. Thanks.

Sorry for the super late response. While we usually do have those, we did not this year. Hope you were able to find them somewhere!

I was looking for your actual hours of operation and could not find them. We love your store! Sadly we can only make it out a few times each summer. Could you remind us of your daily schedule, please?
July 3, 2012 at 6:29 am
After tomorrow (the 4th of July) we’ll be switching to our summer hours, which are: Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm; Sunday 10 am to 5 pm.
If you’re ever in doubt about the hours, feel free to call!
(I gave up on keeping the hours up to date on here. I forgot to take them down last fall when we closed, and we had people showing up in February during that warm spell, looking for tomatoes.)
